A Mid-Century Modern Kitchen Remodel in Sunnyvale · Light Grey Fenix · by Tredi Interiors
Some homes have bones that demand to be respected. This Sunnyvale mid-century modern residence — with its low roofline, clerestory windows, and open connection between interior and garden — was one of them. The challenge was not to modernize it.
The challenge was to find a kitchen system sophisticated enough to honor its architecture while transforming it completely. We found that system in Arrital’s AK Project collection, finished in a serene light grey Fenix. And the result is exactly what a mid-century modern kitchen should be: clean, calm, considered, and alive with the quality of its materials.
Italian Design Meets Mid-Century Modern: Two Philosophies, One Language
This project revealed something that guides our approach at Tredi Interiors: Italian design and mid-century modern architecture are not two separate aesthetics placed in dialogue. They are the same conviction, expressed in two different centuries.
Mid-century modernism — born from Eames, Neutra, and the Case Study Houses of Southern California — held that good design is democratic, functional, and beautiful precisely because it does not try to be decorative. Arrital’s AK Project was designed by an architect, for architects, from the same conviction: clean geometry, material honesty, and no ornament that does not serve a purpose.
When an Italian kitchen system built on those values enters a mid-century modern home, the result is not contrast. It is continuation. This Sunnyvale kitchen does not look like an Italian kitchen installed in an MCM home. It looks like the kitchen the architect who designed the house always intended it to have.
The Brief: A Kitchen That Respects the Architecture
The clients had lived in their Sunnyvale home for twelve years. They loved the bones of the house — the horizontal lines, the relationship with the garden, the generous natural light — but the kitchen had never kept pace with the rest of the home. Dated cabinetry, poor storage, and a layout that closed the cook off from the living space had made it the weakest room in the house.
Their brief to Tredi Interiors was precise: a kitchen that feels native to a mid-century modern home, not imposed on it. Clean lines without coldness. Italian quality without ostentation. A space that could host a dinner party of twelve or a quiet Sunday breakfast with the same ease. And above all — no handles. The visual silence of a handleless system was non-negotiable.
Arrital’s AK Project was the answer from the very first design session.
Why Arrital AK Project for a Mid-Century Modern Home
A system designed around clean lines and visual silence. The AK Project collection, designed by architect Franco Driusso for Arrital, is built on a single conviction: that a kitchen should be a resolved piece of architecture, not a collection of units. Its modular system, fully handleless opening mechanisms, and wide palette of matte finishes make it one of the most sympathetic Italian kitchen collections for mid-century modern interiors — precisely because MCM architecture shares the same values of clean geometry, material honesty, and function made beautiful.
Handleless from every angle. AK Project offers multiple handleless opening solutions — integrated groove channels, push-pull mechanisms, and recessed rail handles — all engineered to maintain the flat, continuous surface that a mid-century modern interior demands. From across the room, the kitchen reads as a single architectural plane. Up close, every detail reveals the precision of Italian factory manufacturing.
The Finish: Light Grey Fenix
For this Sunnyvale project, the finish selection was the critical decision — and after studying the home’s existing palette, the answer was light grey Fenix.
The home’s character was already established: the warm tones of the original teak floors, the cream plaster walls, the black steel window frames. The kitchen needed a finish that would sit quietly and confidently within that palette — neither competing with the architecture nor disappearing into it. Light grey Fenix proved ideal. Its soft, neutral grey provides a calm, architectural backdrop that lets the warm wood and natural light of the home take center stage, while contributing a contemporary serenity entirely in keeping with the mid-century modern spirit.
Fenix is no ordinary surface. This advanced Italian material is renowned for its ultra-matte, soft-touch finish — a quality that is perfect for an MCM interior, because it absorbs light rather than reflecting it, eliminating glare and reinforcing the flat, continuous planes the architecture demands. In a light grey tone, that matte surface reads as pure, modern, and effortlessly refined. Fenix is also exceptionally practical: it resists fingerprints, scratches, and everyday wear, and its micro-surface can even recover minor marks with heat. For a kitchen that is genuinely lived in — hosting both the dinner parties of twelve and the quiet Sunday breakfasts — that durability ensures the light grey Fenix maintains its flawless, day-one beauty for decades.
The result is a finish chosen not from a catalogue, but for this specific home, in this specific light: a soft grey that honors the warmth of the existing materials while delivering the visual silence and contemporary calm the clients wanted. Pale, matte, and quietly luxurious, the light grey Fenix is the perfect material translation of mid-century modern values into the present day.
Layout: Opening the Kitchen to the Living Space
The original kitchen was galley-format — closed off from the dining and living areas by a load-bearing wall segment and a half-wall. Working with the client’s architect, Tredi Interiors redesigned the layout around an open-plan L-configuration with a central peninsula. The peninsula now faces the living space directly, eliminating the separation entirely. The cook is never out of the conversation again.
This transformation does more than improve flow; it restores the home to its mid-century modern ideals. MCM architecture was built on openness and connection — between rooms, and between interior and landscape. By opening the kitchen to the living space, the remodel finally allows the kitchen to participate in the home’s defining sense of flow, light, and togetherness.
Storage: Every Inch Resolved
AK Project’s modular architecture allowed the storage layout to be fully resolved before a single panel was ordered. Tall pull-out pantry columns flank the refrigerator. Deep base drawers replace lower cabinet doors throughout — because in an Italian kitchen system, drawers are always the answer to base storage, offering full access and effortless organization. A dedicated appliance garage with a tambour door keeps the countertop clear. Integrated bin storage is concealed within the base run.
Nothing is left to chance, and nothing is left visible that should not be. This is the discipline that separates a truly resolved kitchen from a merely attractive one — and it is what allows the light grey Fenix surfaces to remain so clean and uninterrupted. With every function intelligently concealed, the kitchen maintains its serene, architectural calm at all times.
Uncompromising Quality and Made in Italy
Tredi Interiors is renowned for its commitment to delivering the highest quality products and services, and this project was no exception. The Italian kitchen cabinets anchoring this Sunnyvale home are genuinely Made in Italy by Arrital — engineered to exacting European standards and finished with materials, like Fenix, chosen for both beauty and longevity.
As a dedicated design studio and direct importer, Tredi Interiors managed every stage of the process — from concept and 3D visualization to importation, coordination, and precise installation — ensuring the finished kitchen reads as a single, flawless architectural element. It is also a quietly sustainable choice: cabinetry built to last for decades, rather than replaced every ten years, significantly reduces a home’s long-term footprint — a value perfectly in keeping with the enduring spirit of a mid-century home.
The Intersection of Aesthetics and Functionality
A distinguishing feature of Tredi Interiors’ work is the ability to strike a perfect balance between aesthetics and functionality, and this Sunnyvale kitchen is a defining example. The light grey Fenix surfaces and handleless fronts deliver the visual silence the clients demanded, while the resolved storage and open layout make the kitchen genuinely effortless to use. Beauty and function are not in tension here; they are one and the same — exactly as both Italian design and mid-century modernism always intended.
